I find, for short runs, that nothing in the sand is neccessary.
Personaly, I think Altius said it best. It gives you the feel of a free take off without having to worry about your step.
For begining vaulters there is a feeling of confidence because the pole tip won't slip, and there is no hard box to freek them out.
Like the videos show, it is a drill for getting your arms right and controling your body vs the pole.
I have also used the pit to teach young vaulters to get used to a bend by putting them on a very light pole from 2 or 3 steps.
